AND MATERIOLOGY OF THE SIBERIAN BRANCH OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES State scientific center of the Russian Federation. Established in 1984. SHPERE OF ACTIVITY Scientific investigations in the following directions: physical mesomechanics of structure-inhomogeneous media; computer design of new materials and technologies for their obtaining; materials of new generations on metal, ceramic, and polymeric bases; scientific foundations for technologies of strengthening and surface processing of materials; nondestructive test methods. MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS Development of mesomechanics - a new science relating the continuum mechanics (macro level) with the plasticity physics (micro level). In mesomechanics a stressed solid body is considered as a multi-level self-adjusting system, in which micro, meso, and macro levels are organically interrelated and described by common equations. A constructor can input the information about material under development into a computer and simulate its deformations and destructions under any stress conditions, and thus optimize the given physico-mechanical properties. It becomes possible to design with a computer the materials of new generations and predict the operation resources of equipment and constructions. Using mesomechanics as a basis, new nondestructive test methods are elaborated, as well as the principles for production of materials and strengthening coverings with damping properties, which can redistribute internal stresses and equalize them over the article volume, that prevents sudden destruction and provides high reliability and long service life of materials. Damping principle has been realized in development of new materials of instrumental and constructional purposes. New materials and strengthening coverings have been used for production of numerous instruments, parts of drilling and oil-field equipment, bearing, locking equipment, and articles for medicine.
