TOMSK STATE UNIVERSITY
Established on May 16 (29), 1878.
Being founded by the decree of the State Council of Russia,
the Imperial Tomsk University become the first Higher educational establishment in the Asian part of Russia and one
of the National centres of education, science, and culture.
More than 10 thousands of students. About 200 doctors of sciences and 800 candidates of sciences.

SPHERE OF ACTIVITY
For more than 100-year history, large scientific and pedagogical schools over the whole spectrum of exact and natural scientists as well as the humanities were established in the University.
The University includes 99 sub-faculties and 15 departments: Mechanical and Mathematical, Physical, Radio-Physical, Physico-Technical, Department of Applied Mathematics
and Cybernetics, Department of Informatics, Chemical,
Geological and Geographical, Biological and Soil,
Historical Department with the sub-department of international relations, Philological Department with the sub-department
of Journalism, Economical, Philosophical Department
with the sub-department of sociology, politology, Culturological, Department of Foreign Languages.
The University also includes the Institute of Law, International Arts College, International Higher School of Agriculture
and Environmental Protection, Higher Business School, Novosibirsk Branch Department of Law, Centre for Research
and Education in Rocket and Artillery Sciences. Fundamental and applied researches as well as the elite training of specialists are carried out in scientific research institutes at the University: Siberian Physico-Technical Institute, Scientific Research Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Scientific Research Institute of Biology and Biophysics, Siberian Botanical Gardens, Scientific Research Institute of Social and Economic Problems
of Siberia, as well as in more than
30 scientific research laboratories at departments.
72 dissertation councils, including 12 ones for doctor’s dissertations, work in the University.
Studied are 450 post-graduate student in 62 specialities
and 30 persons working for doctor’s degree.
Among the subdivisions of the University are the Scientific Library (about 4 mln. volumes), the Herbarium
(0.5 mln units stored), the Museum of Siberian History, Archaeology, and Ethnography, the Paleontological Museum,
the Mineralogical Museum, the Zoological Museum,
the Tomsk State University Publishing House, the scientific bases in Hakassia and Altai, the American Culture Centre.
The Choir of the Tomsk State University, the Ensemble
of Violinists, the Variety Orchestra, the Literature-and-Art Theatre, the Club of Skin-Divers SKAT, in which World
and European champions and record-holders were trained,
are well known far outside Tomsk.
The University actively develops international relations, performs the joint projects in collaboration with the Universities of USA, U.K., France, Germany, Holland, China, and other countries.

MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS
About 100 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences
and academies of sciences of other CIS countries, 50 winners
of the State prizes, one winner of the Nobel prize, a great number of statesmen, heads of educational and scientific establishments
of Russia graduated from the Tomsk State University.
Among the graduates and workers of the Tomsk State University are N.N.Burdenko, Academician of the USSR Academy
of Sciences, first President of the Academy of Medical Sciences (he was the first in the world who perform an operation on
a patient’s heart); Academician A.K.Krasnin, winner
of the Lenin prize, one of the creators and director of the first
in the world atomic power station (Obninsk); Academician N.N.Semyonov, winner of the State, Lenin, and Nobel’ prizes, founder of the theory of chain chemical reactions; Academician I.M.Vinogradov, director of the V.A.Steklov Mathematical Institute, one of the greatest mathematicians of the XX century.
